Should we replace one for the other?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John P. Kotter, professor at the Harvard Business School, leader in business thinking, leadership and change, defines that \u201cManagement deals with facing complexity. Leadership, by contrast, is about coping with change. The real challenge is combining both, which, although different, are complementary\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucia Langa, director of the Master in High-Performance Leadership at EADA Business School in Barcelona, \u200b\u200ba colleague, and mentor, affirms that \u201cleadership is difficult to define because it is the conjunction of many elements.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucia affirms something revealing, and that is that \u201cthe right leader does not speak of leadership, he exercises it naturally. On the other hand, who is not a leader usually uses that meaning to talk about himself, even presuming to be so\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Managing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a set of daily activities related to administration, organization, planning, control, ultimately, solution, and decision-making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, <\/span><b>leadership<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involves more committed activities, such as defining the purpose, communicating it, engaging others, encouraging them, being an example to follow. It is, in short, creating an atmosphere of shared work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the previous definitions, we can establish <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thehotelfactory.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/FOTO-1-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>that the <\/span><b>main differences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between leadership and management are, respectively, the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting an orientation vs. planning and budgeting<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aligning people vs. organizing and staffing<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motivate people vs. control and solve problems<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, we can establish that leadership is people-oriented, while management is task-oriented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, management and leadership are not excluding skills, so it would be incorrect to think that it is better to dominate one more than the other. Strong leadership with weak management is no better, and sometimes even worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key is to ensure skills <\/span><b>complement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each other, and the challenge is that they do it in a <\/span><b>balanced <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The functional integration of both systems allows success in an increasingly complex and volatile environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the hotel factory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we work with our clients in developing leadership in their organizations, through training and coaching.
