The <\/span>splendor<\/b> of<\/span> the best times has returned<\/b> strongly to <\/span>Donostia<\/b>. The <\/span>beginnings<\/b> of this splendor go back <\/span>174 years ago<\/b>, when in 1845, doctors advised <\/span>queen Isabel II <\/b>(Mar\u00eda Cristina de Borbon\u2019s daughter) to <\/span>bathe<\/b> in <\/span>La Concha<\/b> as a <\/span>treatment<\/b> for her <\/span>skin<\/b> problems. The activity, which was considered eccentric, soon became a fashion; from that moment, <\/span>the high society began to spend their summers in the north of Spain.<\/b><\/p>\n

Years later, <\/span>Maria Cristina de Austria<\/b>, Alfonso XII\u2019s widow (Isabel II\u2019s son), was a <\/span>key<\/b> character of the city\u2019s touristic boom<\/b>, as she converted San Sebastian in the <\/span>summer court of the Spanish crown<\/b>. New <\/span>buildings<\/b> were built with a marked French style of the <\/span>Belle \u00c9poque<\/b> that, together with the therapeutic and relaxing effects of the waters of the iconic La Concha beach, it attracted other notable people of the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

From 1961, due to the <\/span>citizen insecurity<\/b>, the <\/span>touristic demand <\/b>in San Sebasti\u00e1n <\/span>decreased.<\/b> In <\/span>2011<\/b> the city experienced the <\/span>rebirth<\/b> of the new <\/span>Belle \u00c9poque.<\/b> Tourism emerged again<\/b> in the magic city of San Sebasti\u00e1n, but this time,<\/span> even stronger.<\/b> So much, that according to the data published by Exceltur in 2018, <\/span>San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/b> has positioned itself as the <\/span>first<\/b> urban destination in Spain<\/b> with the <\/span>higher ADR<\/b>, and the <\/span>second<\/b> one, regarding <\/span>RevPAR.<\/b><\/p>\n

This growth is also reflected in the number of open hotel establishments estimated in Donostia. In this graphic we can observe how the maximum number of establishments opened in 2006 was 92, while in 2018 it has been 154.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nAfter developing a research of San Sebastian<\/span>, new hotel openings are expected in 2019<\/b>, so everything points that the destination will <\/span>continue<\/b> its growth, after being paralyzed several years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of the collaboration with several hotels in the destination,<\/span> the hotel factory<\/span><\/i> team has been able to know firsthand about tourism in San Sebasti\u00e1n, visiting the following hotels:<\/span><\/p>\n

    The visits made in each of these hotels have allowed us to draw the following conclusions regarding the tourist profile in Donostia:<\/span><\/p>\n

      Profile of the client. French, American, English <\/b>and<\/span> Spanish <\/b>(traveling from Barcelona and Madrid) who travel as a <\/span>couple<\/b> are the main nationalities in San Sebastian hotels.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Seasonality<\/b>. As well as in the majority of destinations in Spain, San Sebastian reaches its <\/span>maximum level of hotel occupancy during the summer<\/b>. On the other hand, unlike other Spanish destinations, <\/span>September<\/b> gains strength because of the International <\/span>film festival <\/b>held in the city. The hoteliers highlighted that the <\/span>months of lower occupancy<\/b> are <\/span>January<\/b> (except festivities) and <\/span>February<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Reservation channel.<\/b> The <\/span>reservations<\/b> come mainly from <\/span>online channels<\/b>, such as Booking and Expedia, in addition to a significant <\/span>increase<\/b> in reservations through <\/span>direct channels<\/b> (own web, telephone, mail\u2026).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Among <\/span>the most valued attributes <\/b>for clients, the following stood out:<\/span><\/p>\n

        Homely service<\/b>. Expressed by guests as the sensation of \u201cfeeling like home\u201d. Examples of hotels in which customers have indicated this attribute as \u201cmost valued\u201d are <\/span>Heredad de Unanue <\/b>and<\/span> Villa Soro.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        The <\/span>history<\/b> of the <\/span>destination<\/b> and <\/span>hotel<\/b> buildings<\/b> have been very well valued by the client in hotels like<\/span> Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra<\/b> (<\/span>the oldest hotel with long tradition in the destination<\/b>) and <\/span>Maria Cristina Luxury Collection<\/b><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        The <\/span>location<\/b>, and specially<\/span> the views<\/b> to <\/span>La Concha beach<\/b> is a highly valued aspect by the client in hotels like <\/span>Hotel de Londres y de Inglaterra <\/b>(<\/span>unique<\/b> hotel in San Sebasti\u00e1n with <\/span>frontal views to La Concha<\/b>) and<\/span> Lasala Plaza <\/b>(side views).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Finally, we must not forget that the <\/span>great boom of San Sebastian <\/b>has been especially <\/span>enhanced<\/b> by its <\/span>gastronomy<\/b>, the art and great hallmark of Donostia. <\/span>San Sebasti\u00e1n<\/b> is <\/span>one of the cities in the world with the highest number of Michelin stars<\/b> per square meter (only behind Kyoto and Jap\u00f3n, and far ahead of cities like Par\u00eds or Lyon). The city has 6 Michelin restaurants, two of them are 3* (Akelarre y Arzak) and the other four 1* (Eme Be Garrote, Amelia, Kokotxa and El Mirador de Ul\u00eda). <\/span><\/p>\n

        The gastronomy of the destination not only pushes a <\/span>Michel\u00edn clientele<\/b>; but also attract <\/span>other public <\/b>who looks for the <\/span>gastronomic treasures of Donostia<\/b>, the famous \u201c<\/span>pintxos<\/i><\/b>\u201d, traditional concept that has been evolving until it becomes miniature haute cuisine. <\/span><\/p>\n
